Yes, my head is a hospice
for plans, lines, and lists.

These live documents
are the opiate
of the word addicts.

I’m swinging from your mizzenmast,
you ought to cut me down fast
before the welcome party on the other shore
sees me, before
ample examples of your carbon-copy cartography,
dead demarcations in bottles
reach the beach.
Maybe I leapt to the sea.
Or maybe these handprints on my back
tell a different story.
You leafed through logs
and loosed the lifeboats,
hanged me with my own ropes,
the ropes I tried to use
to bind you to the mast
when you were
on the receiving end of sirens
I hope you were deafened by my splash,
because if their voices hit your ears this time,
after my burial at sea,
they’ll lure you to the rocks for sure;
no one will make it out alive.
I wrote these songs in the belly of a whale.
It’s a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.
I will keep swimming like I always do.
Even dead, I couldn’t bear to let myself just float.
